Hot Tyre Pickup on Epoxy Floors: What Causes It and How to Stop It

Dealing with hot tyre pickup epoxy can be frustrating, especially when you’ve invested in what should be a long-lasting floor. Across Hobart, from garages in Bridgewater to commercial spaces in Brighton and residential properties in Sorell, epoxy flooring problems are more common than they should be, and they’re almost always preventable. This guide explains why these issues occur and what you can do about them.

Understanding the Root Causes of Hot Tyre Pickup on Epoxy Floors The vast majority of epoxy floor problems in Hobart trace back to one or more of these root causes: inadequate concrete preparation, moisture issues in the slab, incorrect product selection for the environment, application errors during installation, or premature exposure to traffic or chemicals before full cure. Understanding which of these is behind your specific issue is essential for determining the right fix. Professional epoxy flooring services that follow proper procedures can prevent these issues entirely.

Hobart’s climate plays a role in several of these failure modes. The cooler temperatures and higher humidity experienced across Tasmania can extend curing times, increase the risk of moisture-related adhesion failures, and affect the viscosity and flow characteristics of epoxy products during application. Contractors who are experienced with local conditions know how to manage these variables, while less experienced operators may encounter problems they haven’t anticipated.

Diagnosis and Assessment If you’re experiencing hot tyre pickup epoxy issues on your Hobart property, the first step is accurate diagnosis. Different problems have different causes and different solutions. A thorough assessment involves examining the failure pattern (is it localised or widespread?), checking whether the failure is adhesive (between the epoxy and concrete) or cohesive (within the epoxy layer itself), testing for moisture beneath the coating, and reviewing the original installation records if available.

For widespread adhesive failure, the cause is almost certainly related to surface preparation or moisture. For localised problems, contamination, chemical exposure, or mechanical damage are more likely culprits. A detailed look at the related common causes will help you narrow down what’s happening with your floor.

Prevention Strategies The best approach to hot tyre pickup epoxy is prevention. Here are the key strategies that Hobart’s best contractors employ to avoid these problems:

Thorough Surface Preparation Diamond grinding to achieve the correct concrete surface profile (CSP 2-3) is non-negotiable. Acid etching, while still used by some budget operators, rarely achieves the consistent profile needed for reliable long-term adhesion. The grinding process also reveals any existing coatings, sealers, or contaminants that could cause adhesion problems. For properties in Hobart’s older suburbs, where concrete slabs may have been treated with various products over the decades, this step is critical.

Comprehensive Moisture Testing Hobart’s climate means that concrete moisture is a more significant concern here than in many other Australian cities. Professional moisture testing using calcium chloride tests or in-situ relative humidity probes should be standard practice. If moisture levels exceed the thresholds specified by the epoxy manufacturer, a moisture mitigation system must be applied before proceeding. This adds to the project cost but prevents potentially catastrophic adhesion failure later. More on this in our moisture testing guide.

Correct Product Selection Not all epoxy products are equal, and selecting the right system for the specific application is crucial. A garage floor subject to hot tyre pickup needs a different product specification than a decorative interior floor. An outdoor area exposed to UV needs a UV-stable topcoat. A food preparation area needs a food-safe, chemical-resistant system. Experienced Hobart contractors match products to applications based on the manufacturer’s specifications and their own field experience.

Proper Application Technique Mixing ratios, film thickness, recoat windows, and application temperature ranges must all be followed precisely. Epoxy products are chemical systems, and deviating from the manufacturer’s specifications almost always leads to performance issues. In Hobart’s variable temperatures, maintaining the product and substrate within the specified temperature range may require scheduling work during appropriate weather windows or using supplementary heating in enclosed spaces.

Repair Options If you’re already dealing with hot tyre pickup epoxy on an existing floor, repair options range from localised patch repairs to full strip-and-recoat depending on the extent and nature of the damage. For small areas of damage, spot repairs can be effective and economical. The damaged area is cut back to sound material, the exposed concrete is re-prepared, and a matching repair patch is applied. For widespread failure, a full removal and reinstallation is usually the most cost-effective long-term solution.

In Hobart, several reputable contractors specialise in diagnosing and repairing failed epoxy floors. They can often save floors that appear badly damaged by identifying and addressing the root cause before applying a new coating system.
