Epoxy Flooring Cost per Square Metre in Australia 2026

Understanding epoxy flooring cost per m2 is one of the most important steps before committing to an epoxy flooring project in Hobart. Whether you’re coating a residential garage in New Town, upgrading a commercial space in Lenah Valley, or renovating a property in West Hobart, having a clear picture of the costs involved helps you budget accurately and avoid surprises. This guide breaks down the real numbers for Hobart and greater Tasmania.

What Determines Epoxy Flooring Cost per Square Metre in Australia 2026? The final price of any epoxy flooring project in Hobart depends on multiple variables. The most significant factors include the total floor area, the condition of the existing concrete, the type of epoxy system selected, and any additional preparation work required. A brand-new slab in a recently built home in Brighton or Sorell will typically cost less to coat than a 40-year-old garage floor in Sandy Bay that needs extensive crack repair and moisture remediation.

Material costs also vary significantly between product types. A basic solid-colour epoxy system uses less expensive materials than a metallic or quartz-filled system. The number of coats applied, the thickness of each coat, and the inclusion of a premium topcoat (such as polyaspartic for UV resistance) all add to the material bill. Labour is the other major component, and Hobart labour rates for skilled floor coating applicators typically range from $50 to $80 per hour. Price Ranges for Hobart in 2026 Based on current market rates across greater Hobart, here are the typical price ranges for epoxy flooring cost per m2:

Residential Epoxy Flooring Standard garage floor coating (flake or solid colour): $50 to $85 per square metre. This includes surface preparation, a two-coat epoxy system, and a clear topcoat. A standard single garage (approximately 18 square metres) typically costs between $900 and $1,530, while a double garage (36 square metres) ranges from $1,800 to $3,060. Premium systems like metallic epoxy can push these figures to $100-$180 per square metre.

Commercial Epoxy Flooring Commercial applications in Hobart typically range from $60 to $130 per square metre, depending on the system requirements. Warehouses and factories often benefit from economies of scale on larger areas, with per-square-metre costs decreasing for projects over 200 square metres. Retail and showroom floors requiring high-end finishes like metallic or custom designs sit at the upper end of this range. For specific commercial pricing, explore our commercial epoxy services.

Additional Costs to Factor In Beyond the base coating cost, Hobart property owners should budget for potential extras. Concrete repair work (crack filling, levelling) can add $10-$30 per square metre. Moisture mitigation, if required, adds $15-$25 per square metre. Furniture or equipment removal and replacement may incur additional charges. Some contractors include these in their quoted price, while others list them separately, so always confirm what’s included when comparing quotes.

Tasmania-Specific Cost Factors Several factors make epoxy flooring cost per m2 in Tasmania slightly different from mainland pricing. Freight costs for epoxy materials shipped to Hobart add a small premium, typically $2-$5 per square metre compared to mainland capital cities. However, the competitive local market and lower overhead costs for Hobart-based contractors often offset this freight premium. The key is to obtain quotes from established local contractors rather than fly-in operators who may charge travel premiums.

Hobart’s climate also affects costs indirectly. Projects scheduled during the optimal installation window (October to April) tend to proceed more efficiently, potentially reducing labour costs. Winter installations may require longer curing times between coats, adding to the project timeline and potentially to labour charges. Experienced Hobart contractors factor these seasonal considerations into their quotes. Use our cost calculator to get a preliminary estimate for your specific project.

How to Get the Best Value Getting the best value for epoxy flooring cost per m2 in Hobart doesn’t mean choosing the cheapest quote. The lowest price often correlates with inferior products, inadequate preparation, or inexperienced applicators, all of which lead to premature failure and the need for costly repairs. Instead, focus on these strategies to maximise value:

First, obtain at least three quotes from established Hobart contractors. Compare not just the bottom-line price but the specific products named, the preparation process described, the number of coats included, and the warranty terms offered. A contractor who specifies products by brand name and provides a detailed scope of work is generally more trustworthy than one offering a vague lump sum. Read our guide to understanding epoxy quotes for more detail on what to look for.

Second, time your project strategically. Many Hobart contractors offer competitive pricing during their quieter months (typically May to August) to keep their crews working. While winter installation requires more care around curing times, experienced contractors manage this effectively, and you may save 10-15% compared to peak season pricing.

Third, consider the long-term cost of ownership. A professionally installed epoxy floor that lasts 15-20 years costs significantly less per year than a cheaper system that fails after 3-5 years and requires full removal and replacement. The cheapest option upfront is rarely the cheapest option over the life of the floor.

Comparing Epoxy to Alternative Flooring Costs When evaluating epoxy flooring cost per m2, it helps to compare against the alternatives. Polished concrete in Hobart typically costs $80 to $150 per square metre, vinyl plank runs $40 to $80 per square metre (installed), and tiles range from $60 to $120 per square metre including installation. When you factor in longevity, maintenance costs, and replacement frequency, epoxy consistently delivers strong value for money, particularly in high-wear areas like garages, workshops, and commercial spaces. All contractors working in Hobart should hold current CBOS registration and carry public liability insurance of at least $10 million for commercial projects. Always verify these credentials before engaging a contractor, regardless of how competitive their pricing appears.
